Alsace is recognised as one of the most picturesque regions in France.
Located in the eastern part of the country, it has a reputation for its flower filled villages and crisp white wines.
The region also is home to the European Parliament, which is located in the regions' capital city, Strasbourg.
Notable attractions in Strasbourg include the Notre Dame Cathedral, The Museum of Fine Arts, which houses works by Goya, El Greco and Rubens. The old part of the city features cobbled streets, with cafes and bars nestling under the trees.
Another way to tour the region is by boat along the long stretches of canals leading to the Rhone or the Marne rivers.
The route also allows visitors to experience the top of the Marne au Rhin Canal using the historic 138 foot Arzviller lift, a fantastic feat of engineering that transports the boats up the side of the mountain bypassing 17 locks.
If you take the Routes des Vins (The Wine Road) through Alsace from Strasbourg, you would discover Mulhouse. This particular town has a passion for museums, including an Automobile Museum displaying over 100 makes of cars, Museum of Printed Fabrics and the Eco Museum.
Another popular stop along the Route Des Vins is the town of Colmar where the restored timber buildings with their multi-coloured roof tiles provide a colourful view.
Christmas time in Alsace is particularly special when Christmas markets open around the 6th December and continue through to Christmas Eve. The most famous of these markets are those in Strasbourg and Kayserberg.
