Your first
decision should be which VCR format you want. You may choose between VHS,
SuperVHS (S-VHS), 8mm and Hi8. You can pretty well write off Beta, though,
as that war is long over and there's only one Beta VCR on the market with
which we're familiar. Still, if you have a decade's worth of Beta tapes,
and only want to use the VCR for playing them and recording new stuff from
TV, you might want to take a look at that format. Decide what you're going
to do with the machine: whether its primary function will be time
shifting, movies, or whatever. Then, decide what features are important to
you and how much you're willing to pay for them. Higher end VCR's
positively sparkle with features, but if you're never going to use them,
then what's the point? Seven day timers are great, but not if you need
