Tablet PC's
Picture an A4-sized laptop, without a keyboard,
with a touch-sensitive screen that's operated by a stylus like a PDA -
you've just imagined a tablet PC. In terms of performance, they're
equivalent only to a low-spec laptop, but the important thing is their low
weight, pen-based operation and long battery life. Because tablets are
operated with a stylus, rather than the standard mouse/keyboard
combination, it's possible to use one effectively while standing - a bit
like an e-clipboard.
Laptops
The penalties of laptop ownership - short battery life, small screen
and lack of power - are steadily being eroded as technology improves.
Laptops are more attractive now than they've ever been for portable
computing, or as a replacement for a large desktop machine.
The key thing to remember about laptops is that you are
paying for their size, weight and the screen technology. For a given
amount of money, you will not be able to buy a laptop that is as well
specified as a desktop. The larger the screen, and the lighter and smaller
your laptop, the more it will cost. |
